New and Emerging Occupations: Vocational Guidance and Counseling of Disadvantaged Students. Final Report.
Kinter, Ona Kay; Marco, Gayle J.
A project was conducted to plan and conduct a one-day workshop to assist counselors in providing vocational guidance to disadvantaged students. The objectives of the workshop, which was held by the Department of Vocational Education of the University of Pittsburgh, were as follows: to generate awareness of new and emerging occupations and occupational skills; to develop awareness of the relationship between academic preparation and occupational training; to enable vocational guidance and counseling personnel to relate the interests, aptitudes, and needs of disadvantaged students to meaningful occupational preparation; and to provide vocational guidance and counseling personnel with an organized series of personal experiences and printed materials to help them to provide incentive-engendering counseling to disadvantaged students. (This project report includes the workshop agenda, a discussion of the definition and characteristics of disadvantaged learners, criteria for developing a learner analysis profile and a sample profile, a disadvantaged learner characteristics rating scale, excerpts from a guide on career exploration, detailed procedures for analyzing occupations, an occupational perceptions worksheet, a workshop exit evaluation, and a summary of responses to the exit evaluation.)
