Working at Saving Time in Education: An Innovative Vocational Education Delivery System. Final Report FY 1983-84.
Scarborough, Jule Dee; Ellis, Joseph R.
The second year of a project that developed and implemented a model for on-bus instruction during travel time from two high schools to area vocational centers demonstrated that such an innovative delivery system was viable and effective. All units from Pollock's "A Curriculum Guide for Pre-Employment Skills" were adapted for use in the project. Worksheets and tests were developed to supplement the taped materials. Six units on basic mathematics were also taped for use during on-bus instruction. Students in experimental groups scored higher on posttests for knowledge of employability/job survival skills but did not acquire a favorable attitude toward using bus time for instructional purposes. Following the 13-page abstract are extensive appendixes, including a manuscript submitted for publication describing the project, a summation of evaluation data, and cognitive and attitudinal measures. Printed copies are provided of the material found on the tapes and student handouts that include information sheets, worksheets, and tests. A sheet preceding the materials for each tape indicates unit, lesson, and tape number or letter; title; topic; objective; activities; and required materials. Topics include sources of employment, resume writing, contact with employers, completing job applications, job interviewing techniques, what to expect after one is hired, job survival skills, and mathematics.
