Hall, Cherlyn
Intended to provide guidance for secondary school mathematics teachers who desire to maximize the reading abilities of their students and thus maximize students' performance, this report attempts to make the secondary school teacher aware of some of the difficulties encountered in reading mathematics and offers some techniques, activities, and strategies to overcome these difficulties. The content is divided into five categories or factors that contribute to problems in reading mathematics: the language of mathematics, mathematical vocabulary and symbols, word problems, mathematical reading skills, and readability of mathematics textbooks. Each section includes a discussion of the reading problems, suggestions for overcoming difficulties in reading mathematics, and an annotated list of resources. (HOD)
