The language program guide explains the theoretical basis and the instructional objectives of the approach to developing English language proficiency, supporting the Houghton Mifflin Reading Series and the Ginn 360 Series. The first of three sections describes the theoretical considerations and the philosophy of the program; it provides definitions and rationale; notes five basic language-learning principles; lists goals and objectives in enhancing skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing; describes the methodology; and explains the four program components: sounds, words, sentence structure, and comprehension. The second section presents instructional objectives for various elements of each component: sounds (consonants, vowels, diphthongs, blends, digraphs, prefixes, suffixes, endings, syllables), words (base, compound, rhyming, content, and related words; homonyms, homographs, antonyms, synonyms, idioms), sentence structure (subject/verb plus adjective, adverbs, prepositional phrase, direct object, or indirect object/direct object; dependent/independent clause; independent/dependent clause; there/verb/noun; participle phrase/subject/verb), and comprehension (main idea, details, characters, attitudes, conclusion, sequence). The objectives include appropriate activities, materials, and examples. The third section discusses and provides guidelines for assessment. It also provides a set of 12 lesson plans for the program. Each lesson plan includes an objective and learning activities. An appendix gives the learning level for texts mentioned in the activities. (SB)
