Recommendation on Academic Organization.
Koehnline, W. A.
This report from the President of Oakton Community College (OCC) to the Board of Trustees presents and supports a recommendation to retain the college's interdisciplinary cluster system. Following introductory comments, the report discusses reasons for establishing a cluster college at the present, highlighting the benefits of this systems for faculty, students, and administration. Next, reasons for maintaining a cluster system once it has been established are identified, with emphasis on the 14-year history of the cluster system at OCC. The next section offers responses to criticisms of the existing cluster system and deficiencies that have been observed in it. Information is then presented on the administration of six other community colleges in the region. The concluding section summarizes the advantages of the cluster system and offers the following recommendations: (1) that the Board affirm the organization of the college into clusters; (2) that five clusters be maintained and a dean with a strong mathematics or science background be recruited for one of the clusters; (3) that the president take steps to reduce confusion among faculty and students; (4) that funds be allocated for faculty release time; (5) that annual evaluations of the functions of the clusters be conducted; and (6) that reorganization decisions be made by spring 1988. Recommendations concerning the cluster system in 1983-84 are appended. (AYC)
