Steps for the Remediation of Writing.

Intended to aid any teacher at any level to assist students who are having major difficulties with writing experiences, this handbook presents basic writing skills that students should be able to perform upon graduation from high school. The handbook begins with a definition of writing and a word about the North Carolina competency testing program. This is followed by answers to questions often asked by those concerned with writing. The handbook then outlines nine steps for the development of writing skills: (1) diagnosing, (2) motivating or setting up the writing conditions, (3) prewriting, (4) planning, (5) writing, (6) revising, (7) rewriting, (8) evaluating, and (9) refining writing skills. Appendixes include a selected list of references, a form for a writing plan, a glossary, a word list of frequent misspellings and word misuses, capitalization and punctuation rules, suggested writing topics, a form design for a business letter, an example of a practice telephone memo, and a set of suggestions for parents on how to help a child become a better writer developed by the National Council of Teachers of English.
