VESL in Industry Project. Final Report.
Prince, David
The Vocational English as a Second Language (VESL) in Industry Project was designed to develop and implement a competency-based VESL curriculum to be used with industry-linked VESL language training. Language needs for limited-English-proficient workers in companies in the greater Seattle, Everett, and Tacoma areas were identified through a supervisor survey and worker interviews. A language training program was implemented at one site. The implementation process included assessing the language needs of workers at the company, assessing the language proficiency of the workers, writing the curriculum, and scheduling classes and supervisor seminars. The evaluation procedure consisted of pre- and post-checklists of language competencies. (Appendixes, amounting to over one-half of the report, include the VESL curriculum that details function, structure, and vocabulary as well as materials/notes for eight units; a worker assessment interview; and an evaluating communication skills checklist.
