English as a Second Language--A Plan for Instruction. A 310 Teacher Training Project 1981-1982.
Lee, Nancy; And Others
Produced through a series of workshops for teachers, this manual was prepared to aid English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) instruction at South Florida Junior College (SFJC) and other cooperating agencies. The plan is a culmination of the ideas presented and discussed at the workshops in areas of grammar, pronunciation, conversation, listening comprehension, reading comprehension, and writing. The manual is organized into six sections. Following the first section, which explains the background and rationale for the project, section 2 contains information on the needs of the groups of students who attend ESL classes at SFJC and the program objectives that have been formulated to serve those needs. Section 3 contains the curriculum developed during the project, along with suggested textbooks, resources, and materials. In the fourth section, teaching methods and student activities are proposed. This section also provides methods of recruitment and retention of students and outlines the cultural and language contrasts of Latin and Haitian students. The fifth section suggests methods of student evaluation and instruments that can be used for evaluation, while the final section reiterates the elements of a successful ESL program. (KC)
