Introduction to Computers in Education for Elementary and Middle School Teachers.

Designed to help elementary and middle school teachers increase their level of computer-education literacy, this book discusses the capabilities, limitations, applications, and possible impact of computers in education. Chapter 1 briefly defines what a computer is and explains the book's goals and applications. Chapter 2 provides a technical overview of microcomputers and computer software and hardware, an appendix on calculators, and discussions of computer output devices, the computer's central processing unit, computer memory, and videodisks. Following chapter 3's demonstrations of how computers can provide "automatic flashcards" for students, chapter 4 describes a variety of educational computer games. In chapter 5, the author reviews the histroy of automated symbol manipulation and the development of computer languages such as FORTRAN and BASIC. Chapter 6 focuses on the use of computers for problem solving and outlines several possible applications. Chapter 7's discussion of computer and information science includes attention to modeling and simulation, information retrieval, computer graphics, artificial intelligence, and computer science's educational implications.
