Building Writing Competency. Step by Step Mastery of Sentence and Paragraph Writing Skills. A Title IV-C Language Project. Teachers' Handbook [and Levels 1-6].
Rio Linda Union School District, CA.
A teacher guide and six student workbooks are included in this supplementary writing program which provides daily writing practice in sentence and paragraph skills for children in grades 1-6. Sequentially arranged writing activities isolate and focus on those essential skills that children need to be successful with classroom writing. Using a mastery learning structure, each skill is presented and practiced over four daily lessons with a mastery test following the series of lessons. Students master writing skills in five essential areas: (1) basic sentence writing (capitalization, punctuation, subjects, and predicates); (2) sentence combining (compound subjects and predicates, compound sentences, and conjunctions); (3) correcting run-on sentences; (4) adding details (adjectives, adverbs, phrases, and clauses); and (5) paragraph writing (main idea sentences and detail sentences). The program also utilizes partner-correction and self-correction techniques to provide immediate feedback and reinforcement. In addition, students maintain their own daily progress chart. Objectives are clearly stated in each lesson and no separate manual or workbooks are needed. (Author/DC)
