A federally-funded program of English as a Second Language training and counseling services to encourage assimilation of Haitian immigrants in Florida is described. The unique needs and characteristics of the population served and the varied communities affected are discussed, and the five cooperating institutions (four colleges and one Catholic Center) are listed. The services and activities offered through the organizations are outlined, including a minimum of 30 hours per week of English language training, language laboratory work, counseling, and cooperative program or vocational education. Additional program aspects discussed include staffing, program differences across the five institutions, links with the business community, enrollment and attendance problems and efforts at improving them, and attempts to maintain community contact.
