Resource Sharing of Printed Materials among Dayton-Miami Valley Consortium Libraries in 1982: A Descriptive Study.
Kroah, Larry A.
A study was conducted in 1982 of interlibrary loan transactions among member libraries of the Dayton-Miami Valley Consortium (DMVC), a multitype library network located in Ohio which includes research, academic, special, and public libraries, in order to: (1) identify individual libraries and groups of libraries which are net lenders and net borrowers; (2) identify loaning and borrowing patterns for books and copies of periodical articles; and (3) provide information for an independent examination of the reasons for extant exchange patterns and for a reexamination of the DMVC's interlibrary loan policies and procedures. It was found that: most DMVC libraries are borrowing materials from many consortium libraries; where possible, DMVC libraries are borrowing from smaller and medium-sized libraries rather than requesting materials exclusively from the consortium's research university libraries; while the research-oriented Wright State and University of Dayton libraries are net lenders, they also borrow heavily from each other and from other DMVC libraries; some smaller academic and special libraries are net lenders to the consortium's research university libraries; more books than periodical article photocopies are exchanged by a ratio of approximately 10 to 7; and distance between libraries appears to play a role in determining where borrowing libraries request materials.
