Student Recruitment and Retention in Small Colleges: Colleges of Pride, Determination, and Optimism. A Study of The Brunswick Foundation's Small College Program.
Brunswick Foundation, Inc., Skokie, IL.
Student recruitment and retention at small colleges are considered, and Brunswick Foundation's Small College Program is described. An overview considers problems of small colleges (those with enrollments of 2,000 and less), and the Foundations's approach to meeting the needs of small colleges. The Foundation's Small College Program, which provides grants to reward colleges undertaking exceptional action programs, is outlined in terms of criteria for participation and program components. The Foundation's surveys to determine the main concerns of small colleges are described, and examples of typical survey questions and responses by college presidents are provided. Views of the Foundation on recruitment and retention issues facing small colleges are briefly explained. Additionally, small colleges' responses to the Foundations's recruitment/retention surveys are examined, based on a university team's analysis of survey results. Specific issues that are addressed include: market research, recruitment by the admissions office and auxiliary recruiters, meeting student needs through incentives and curriculum changes, student orientation, academic and social support, dropout prevention, and exit interviews. Content analysis procedures and results are also covered. (SW)
