Nebraska Survey of Sensory Impaired Children and Youth. Final Report, 1981-82.

The report describes the second year of a survey of sensory impaired children in Nebraska. It is explained that results have been used to improve administrative planning and cost efficient delivery of services. Demographic and assessment information was collected and analyzed on 888 sensory impaired children (birth to 21) via questionnaires completed by local education agencies. Assessment information was compiled from scores on the Stanford Achievement Test for Hearing Impaired Students (SAT-HI). The data from the survey are discussed according to three topic areas: highlights of the 1981-82 characteristics of the population (including a breakdown into hearing impairment only, visual handicap only, and both types of handicaps); a comparison of student data from two sources (local education agencies and special schools for deaf); and an analysis of visually handicapped children with regard to Nebraska's American Printing House Registration. A final section reviews uses of the data management system (including generation of individual student profiles), and conclusions and recommendations for increased effectiveness of the statewide survey.
