Regular Educators Specialized Training. Review of the Literature.

Literature on the topic of preparing teachers for mainstreaming was reviewed, with focus on research and writings involving: (1) teacher attitudes toward mainstreaming; (2) teachers' expressed needs in regard to mainstreaming; (3) development of preservice education programs which provide a base of knowledge and experience in mainstreaming; (4) inservice program needs for regular teachers; and (5) Deans' Grant Programs. Appended to the study are: (1) a checklist of individual skills required by elementary and secondary school personnel in mainstreaming programs; (2) a discussion of 10 clusters of teacher competencies relating to the implementation of training programs for teachers who will be working in mainstreamed classrooms (recommendations are included for each competency); (3) a paper presenting a general model for a teacher preparation program and a system for evaluation and planning such a program; and (4) an outline for a comprehensive inservice training program on mainstreaming.
