A Review of Recent Research in Science and Mathematics Education with Particular Reference to Australia.

This document contains separate reviews of recent developments in science and mathematics education research. These literature reviews note those issues that were carefully examined and identify others which had not received attention. Although the reviews concentrated on Australian research, relevant studies in other countries such as the United Kingdom and the United States were also examined. A two-dimensional grid or matrix was established as a guide to the reviews. The first dimension used is level of schooling (primary, secondary, tertiary). The second dimension concerns subject of research (provision, participation, and outcomes). The three areas in the second dimension are further divided as follows: (1) provision (amount-- how much is taught; curriculum-- what is taught; teacher education-- who teaches; support mechanisms-- what systemic assistance is given); (2) participation (who takes part in learning); (3) outcomes (cognitive-- knowledge-based outcomes; investigatory-- skill-based outcomes; affective-- attitudinal outcomes; transition-- expected/actual outcomes of students in transition from level to level; exit-- expected/actual outcomes of students in transition from school to community life, including work and leisure). Thus, 30 different elements represented in the matrix are examined in the reviews. Bibliographies are also provided at the end of each review. (JN)
