A selected annotated bibliography on literacy and basic education, including contributions from practitioners in the worldwide non-formal education network and compiled for them, has three interrelated themes: integration of literacy programs with broader development efforts; the learner-centered or "psycho-social" approach to literacy, often with socio-economic change as an ultimate goal; and community-based initiatives for literacy programs, stressing learner participation in developing materials, teaching peers, and evaluating the program and individual progress. Documents dating between 1963 and 1980, with most entries from 1975 to 1980, are classified into 9 general areas: Approaches and Methods (20 entries); Planning, Curriculum Development, and Training (14); Instructional Aids, Materials, and Technologies (13); Post-Literacy (7); Evaluation of Programs: Lessons and Policy Implications (11); Key Issues and Research Findings (14); Literacy and Development (18); Regional Issues, subdivided into Africa (6), Asia (5), and Latin America (3); and Journals and Newsletters, Bibliographies, and Directories (12). A 10th section lists 19 recent acquisitions, without annotations. The staff of the Non-Formal Education Information Center between 1976 and 1981 is listed. (MH)
