This collection of library documents related to the employment of student assistants in member libraries of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) contains: (1) examples of procedures and policies from the University of Kansas, the University of California at Berkeley, and Michigan State University; (2) recruitment and hiring documents from Iowa State University, the University of Houston, and the University of Chicago; (3) job description and classification examples from Pennsylvania State University and the University of Rochester; (4) samples of orientation and training materials from Indiana University, Dartmouth College, Arizona State University, and Michigan State University; and (5) documents on performance appraisal and grievance procedures from the University of California at Irvine, Indiana University, and the University of Rochester. A concise summary of issues and trends related to the employment of library student assistants covers administration and planning, student personnel policies, the orientation and training of student assistants, the effect of national policy and university economics on student employment, and the tasks best suited to student assistants. A five-item bibliography on student employment and an evaluation sheet for this ARL Systems and Procedures Exchange Center (SPEC) kit are also provided. (ESR)
