Education and Training in Indexing for Document and Information Retrieval: Featuring a Classification of Indexing Concepts and Procedures, A Bibliography of Textbooks Used in Indexing Courses, and Descriptions of Courses, Workshops and Seminars Offered in the United States and Canada.
Anderson, James D.
Information on the 48 courses, workshops, seminars, and other educational opportunities listed in this guide was gathered by questionnaires sent to schools of library and/or information science and organizations sponsoring training opportunities in indexing in the United States and Canada. The definition of indexing used is broad: it includes indexing of collections, monographs, periodicals and other serials, and parts of documents; subjects, authors, titles, and any other characteristic of information and documents of interest to potential users; the creation of both alphabetically arranged indexes and systematically arranged classifications; and both automatic indexing based on computer manipulation of textual symbols and human intellectual identification of content. The guide includes a listing of textbooks used in indexing courses, a classification of indexing concepts and procedures, an alphabetical index to this classification, a classified index to indexing concepts and procedures covered in courses, workshops, and seminars; descriptions of indexing courses, workshops, and seminars; and an index to courses by state or province and city. Information provided for each course listed includes the sponsor, contact person, course number and title, instructor(s), a brief course description, hours of instruction, length of course, credits, prerequisite courses, admission requirements, tuition and fees, frequency offered, textbooks, and topics covered.
