Salaries of faculty members and administrators at the University of California and California State University are examined. Economic conditions nationally and in California are reviewed with specific focus on California's continuing revenue and budgetary situation. Attention is also directed to competition from both university and industrial sectors for faculty in high-demand disciplines; the salaries paid to professionals in other fields; the cost of fringe benefits in the four-year segments' comparison institutions; medical faculty salaries; and projected salaries at the the University of California and California State University needed to achieve parity with comparison institutions. Appended materials include: the text of a California legislative resolution regarding academic salaries; a list of comparison institutions; information on the current methodology and alternative methodologies for reporting faculty salaries and fringe benefits; data on 1983-1984 California State University salaries and cost of fringe benefits; data on 1982-1983 California medical school faculty; report on University of California medical school clinical compensation plans and salaries; and administrator position descriptions.
