Educating Gifted and Talented Pupils in Alberta: Report of the Minister's Task Force on Gifted and Talented Pupils [and] Summary Report.
Alberta Dept. of Education, Edmonton. Planning and Research Branch.
A task force report on education for gifted and talented pupils in Alberta, Canada, provides information on the need and status of such programs. Three main sources of information were tapped: written and oral submissions, the research literature, and the knowledge and experience of task force members. Findings are reported in six general areas: the nature of giftedness, identification procedures, programs and delivery systems, inservice education and training of teachers, evaluation, and provincial initiatives. Issues and topics from written submissions are charted. Among recommendations offered by the task force are that 3-5% of the general school population be used as a guideline for proportions of gifted students; that identification involve several different procedures; that all school jurisdictions designate a staff member to be responsible for coordination and communication regarding the education of gifted and talented pupils; that responsibility for inservice teacher education be shared by appropriate agencies; and that research centers be established that are integrated with a provincial clearinghouse service. A summary of the report is provided in a separate document. (CL)
