Curriculum in English I: Options, Goals, Content.
Mullican, James S.
Intended as a handbook for students of curriculum and teaching methods, this booklet surveys two of the three major elements of an English curriculum (goals and content) as defined by the National Council of Teachers of English. The first chapter traces some philosophical options open to the teacher and curriculum developer and offers a short history of the teaching of English in modern America. The second chapter emphasizes the importance of goals in planning instruction and suggests a set of goals that are directive of teaching practice. The final chapter deals with content and concentrates on curriculum in teacher education institutions on the theory that teachers on the elementary and secondary school levels will select their content from what they have learned in their university classes.
