A Review of Research on Teaching.

This review of current research on teaching focuses upon studies of teaching behaviors and their relationship to student performance. In considering research on classroom climate, examples are presented of studies which used the Flanders Interaction Analysis System (FIAC) to investigate relationships among student achievement and teacher-initiated talk, teacher questions, teacher lecture, teacher use of directions, and pupil-initiated talk. Studies are also cited which used the FIAC to investigate teacher directness and indirectness and pupil achievement. Further studies are identified which reviewed teachers' use of praise and criticism and pupil attitudes. A summary is presented of studies which compared open and traditional teaching approaches. A description is given of several research efforts on classroom management and discipline. Research findings on behavior modification are summarized. (JD)
