Using 5 charts and 32 tables to display related data, this report details the current condition of teaching and teacher education in the United States. The first section, "Current Condition of Teaching in America," reports on who makes up the teaching force in schools today by age, sex, ethnic background, academic preparation, and years of experience. It discusses trends in the number of teachers in the labor force and population trends of school age persons. The workplace is described; students are discussed as well as how teachers feel about their profession and how the American public perceives its educational system. In the second section, supply and demand issues are dealt with in terms of mathematics and science teachers and population enrollment trends. A discussion of factors that will influence the future demand for teachers constitutes section 3. Section 4 describes teacher education, and deals with the caliber of education students compared to students in other majors. Also addressed is what is happening to institutions of higher education. Section 5 draws conclusions and makes recommendations based on the compilation and analysis of the report's data. (JM)
