The Democratic Classroom.
Radz, Michael A.
Two brief papers, outlines, worksheets, and surveys for creating a democratic school environment and furthering citizenship education in grades K-12 are presented. The first paper emphasizes the need for and the role of citizenship education in the school. The second paper discusses the influence of the formal, hidden, and societal curricula on citizenship education and suggests merging these curricula to make learning more meaningful. Further suggestions are that members of individual schools should formulate a specific plan for citizenship education; all principals should be trained as climate leaders rather than building managers; and school, home, and community must find ways to reinforce each other. Two outlines on the democratic classroom present a model for citizenship education and methods for creating a democratic classroom. A third outline lists characteristics of a responsible citizen within three categories: demonstrates respect for law, others, and self; acts with integrity; and is informed and involved. Other attachments include a list of encouraging and discouraging adult behaviors, an analysis of teacher expectations of student behavior, and a classroom attitude survey for teachers. (KC)
