The Pragmatism of Problem Solving in the Mathematical School Curriculum.

References on problem solving are categorized and annotated in this document. The philosophy of problem solving, especially its meaning and its implications for the mathematics curriculum, are examined in references included in the first section. In the second section, references on different strategies and techniques of problem solving that teachers can follow are presented. Recommendations are divided by time period (pre-1960, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s). The third section lists references on a variety of applications of problem solving in the typical classroom, with sections for elementary, junior high, and high school teachers. Finally, a summary draws together some of the ideas in the various references, and conclusions and recommendations are briefly stated. A bibliography and additional sources are listed, and appendices contain a flow chart of a problem-solving approach and a conceptual map of problem solving. (MNS)
