First Montreal Workshop on Videotex Technology. Document de travail #112.
Ball, A.; And Others
This report presents eight papers prepared for a workshop held in June 1980, which was planned to exchange ideas and experiences about, and arrive at a better understanding of, the technological issues that have an impact on videotex systems and their use. Papers emphasize alternative architectures for present and future videotex systems; database structures for supporting simple, user-oriented data retrieval facilities; and the role of information providers. Individual papers presented are (1) "Adaptation of Existing Library Databases to Videotex," by A. J. S. Ball; (2) "Providing Business Information to Prestel," by Brian Botten; (3) "Omnitel TM--An Integrated Broadband Distribution System for the Eighties," by J. J. Coyne; (4) "Database Structures for Videotex Applications," by Jan Gecsei and Gregor V. Bochmann; (5) "Integration of an Alphageometric Information System to a Two Way Coaxial Cable Network," by J. L. Houle; (6) a position paper by D. Leahy on viewdata systems; (7) "Presentation de STAR: (Source Telestel Acces Reseau)" (a minicomputer-based system designed to provide access to a videotex network), by D. Le Moign; and (8) "Preliminary Views on Data Base Architectures for Videotex," by Frank Wm. Tompa. A summary of topics discussed, a list of participants, and a bibliography are included. (LMM)
