Self-Appraisal for University Teachers: A Guide for Workshop Leaders. Occasional Publication No. 19.
Boud, David; Kilty, James
This guide for leaders of workshops on self-appraisal for university teachers presents a process that is being developed in Australia and the United Kingdom to help members of professional groups monitor their effectiveness in conjunction with their peers. The approach has been used in Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Japan. The method allows individuals to define criteria of competence for their work, monitor their daily professional activities, review their individual performance with their peers in the group, and make plans for modifying their practice in the light of their appraisal. The role of facilitator or group leader is to guide participants through each stage, to help individuals and the group make decisions about which steps are most relevant for them, and encourage adequate time for the process to unfold. Eighteen steps of the approach are discussed, and a flow diagram summarizing the steps is presented. Possible variations of the approach are also identified. (SW)
