A teacher's guide to an English as a second language (ESL) and geography module on changing modes of transportation in Canada is presented. The guide contains suggestions for use of module components, a transcription of the audiocassette, the answer key to student worksheets, and a list of resources. The module is designed primarily for secondary level ESL students in a transition or advanced ESL program. As they proceed through the unit, students should be made aware of the importance of transportation to Canada. The language activities in the module give students opportunities to practice vocabulary and idioms related to transportation, reading and listening comprehension skills, expressing cause-result relationships, and requesting travel information by telephone; and to acquire geography specialist skills such as graphing, preparing charts, and understanding diagrams. The factual information of the module is contained in a student reading booklet. Showing the filmstrip with the accompanying taped commentary introduces the main concepts and terms in a relaxed manner. A few word-study activities are suggested to further prepare students for reading the booklet. Practice exercises help students to listen for details from tape-recorded dialogues, recognize levels of politeness and individual speech characteristics, and create dialogues. Content areas of the module include waterways, railways and expansion, private car versus public transit, and airline growth. The resource list includes textbooks and other references, films, filmstrips and slide sets, and maps. (The module consists of a Teacher's Guide, 25 copies of a student reading booklet, a 57-frame color filmstrip, an audiocassette tape, duplicating masters of 23 student worksheets, a set of 10 photos to accompany the word study exercises, a word card game, and a set of dialogue cue cards.)
