Medical Service Specialist, Blocks I & II, 10-10. Military Curriculum Materials for Vocational and Technical Education.

This first course of a two-course, postsecondary-level series for medical service specialists is one of a number of military-developed curriculum packages selected for adaptation to vocational instruction and curriculum development in a civilian setting. The purpose stated for the 50-hour course is to provide training in the basic theory and skills for providing nursing care and treatment to patients in medical wards, dispensaries, and clinics. Information and training is designed for students at the apprentice level. Two blocks of instruction cover Nursing Fundamentals I (ethics, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, vital signs, admission and disposition of patients, hospital and environmental safety, lifting and moving, intake and output procedures, medical material procedures, and common disease-causing organisms) and Nursing Fundamentals II (diet, comfort and hygiene, medical and surgical aseptic techniques, application of heat and cold, and nursing care of surgical patient). Instructor materials include a course chart and plan of instruction detailing the units of instruction, criterion objectives, and support materials needed. Student materials include 12 study guides or workbooks with exercises and problems, four programed texts, and a handout of anatomical drawings. Suggested audiovisual aids are not provided. (YLB)
