The Emergency English Workbook. Practical Reading and Writing Lessons for North American Students.
Lane, Martha A.
This workbook contains reading and writing lessons for North American adults learning English as a second language. It can also be used with English-speaking adults who need to improve basic literacy skills. The vocabulary, reading, and writing exercises in the book were developed to meet essential survival and emergency English needs. The workbook is organized into two parts. The first part contains 25 lessons on everyday life situations. Topics covered include food, telling time, money, shopping, cooking, calendars, families, measuring, maps, transportation, asking questions, using the telephone, household items, mail, describing people, personal health, clothing, jobs, checks and money orders, housing, paying bills, and the seasons. Practice exercises such as fill in the blanks and writing drills are contained in these lessons, and lessons are illustrated with line drawings. The second part of the workbook contains 50 lessons for practice in pronunciation of English sounds. Words and sentences in this part are to be listened to, read, and said by the student. (The workbook is designed to be used with A Handbook for Tutors of Non-English Speaking Students.) (KC)
