Inservice Education in Multicultural Education and Its Effect on Teacher Attitudes.
Nussel, Edward J.; Wiersma, William
This paper reports on the use of the Minnesota Teacher Attitude Inventory (MTAI) to measure scores of teachers participating in a multicultural education institute, which focused on cultural factors in learning and the development of creative educational materials. First, the paper discusses the problem of teachers' maintaining positive attitudes toward multiculturalism (as measured by the MTAI) after the inservice training experience concludes. Efforts to improve the effects of the inservice program by encouraging mutual support among teachers and administrators are then described and MTAI results of the 1981 participants are favorably contrasted with the results of 1966 and 1967 participants. It is concluded that follow-up activities and improved institute content reversed the earlier trend of regression after a short term gain. (GC)
