Building Level Assessment for Multicultural and Nonsexist Education.

Multicultural and nonsexist assessment item banks for school use in planning and assessing of its multicultural and nonsexist education programs are provided. Questionnaires emphasizing local purposes and conditions can be developed for teacher self-assessment and for faculty, parents, students, and support staff to assess and redirect school and individual efforts in multicultural and nonsexist education. Structured interviews and faculty discussions should also be used. The item bank statements were selected from national assessment projects, universities, the Midwest Race and Sex Desegregation Assistance Center, and local school systems. Personal/professional development, awareness and sensitivity, instruction, curriculum, and parent/community relations are self-assessment categories; and leadership, parent/community relations, staff, and students are school assessment areas. The response scale provides a comparison between individual and group perceptions of "what is" a true statement and "what should be," and analysis methods calculate discrepancies. Examples of six teacher self-assessment and teacher assessment questionnaires developed from the multicultural and nonsexist assessment item banks concern education and school practices. Data analysis strategies for developing school action plans and an assessment and planning summary outline building level procedures. Eight appendices contain each item bank and teacher questionnaire. (CM)
