The Foundations of Education as an Academic Area in the Preparation of Teachers with Emphasis on the Social and Cultural Foundations of Education.
Stein, Jay W.
Misunderstandings and confusion surrounding the relevance and inclusion of foundations of education courses in teacher education curriculum are analyzed to identify the meaning and assess the validity of the term "foundations." An analytical survey made of 75 textbooks used in such courses examined texts with similar content or titles, e.g., problems and issues, social perspectives, changes and trends, challenge and reform, and other concept words followed or preceded by the words "education,""schools," or "teaching-learning." A critical examination was also made of various foundations of education courses, offered by 800 institutions, and their content, coverage, and problems with definition and scope. To examine the image of the field of educational foundations, a search was made of library classifications which might indicate publications dealing with the topic. Using the criteria of "professionalism" as generally agreed upon by textbook authors, the study area of educational foundations was analyzed in an attempt to delineate it as a distinct academic field. Suggestions on making studies in educational foundations more effective are offered. (JD)
