Orange County Outdoor School: Cabin Leader's Manual.

Presented in five sections, the manual furnishes cabin leaders (high school students) with background information concerning philosophy, teaching, objectives, daily schedule, and cabin leader responsibilities in the Orange County Outdoor School program. The welcome section contains the history of the Outdoor School, staff responsibilities, organizational chart, weekly schedule, geography of the area with maps, and checklist for new staff members. The section on getting started outlines in detail staff responsibilities; creating good relations with staff and teachers; staff business (school address, phone number, salary and benefits, and dress code); and policies of the Outdoor School. The third section addresses characteristics of a good cabin leader, understanding sixth graders, leadership skills, and cabin leader evaluation. The section on cabin life provides a schedule for the first day, preparation for activities, health care information, cabin inspection sheet form, dining hall procedures and duties, highway rules, and a schedule for the last day. The major part of the manual presents teaching in the outdoors offering topics for discussion and suggesting activities on environmental education; social expectations (group behavior, cabin living), star study; night hike; and use of the four nature trails (Chaparral, Riparian, Geology, and Forest).
