Employer Support for Families with Child Care Needs.
Fischer, Jan Lockwood
Present and past employer support for child care is reviewed in this paper. The first half of the discussion is devoted to a general and brief historical survey describing employer support for families needing child care and detailing working mothers' increasing demand for child care services. Also briefly mentioned are government programs encouraging employer support. The remaining half of the document describes types of employer-sponsored child care programs and types of employers sponsoring such programs. Programs described include flexible personnel policies (such as flextime, job sharing, flexiplace), paternity and maternity leave provisions, flexible benefit programs, employer-donated services, resource and referral services, child care program slot reservation services, voucher/vendor programs, family day care home networks, and employer-sponsored child care centers. Types of employers described include those associated with the military, campuses, labor unions, governments, hospitals, and businesses. Related graphs and charts are appended. (RH)
