The Review and Proceedings of the Community College Humanities Association, Number 4.
Schmeltekopf, Donald D., Ed.; Billiar, Donald E., Ed.
This collection of articles, reviews, and reports related to the humanities in community and two-year colleges begins with Fred Pincus's "Class Conflicts and Community Colleges: Vocational Education during the Reagan Years," which discusses the social effects of the Reagan administration's educational policies, especially with respect to vocational education. Next, articles by Robert Dawidoff, John O'Connor, and Claire Gaudiani discuss the state of humanities scholarship in the fields of history, philosophy, and literary criticism. Then, Martin Spear and Dennis McGrath present "A Model General Education Program," based on that developed at the Community College of Philadelphia. Next, Eleanor F. Katz reviews "Understanding Arguments: An Introduction to Informal Logic," by Robert J. Fogelin; and Janis Coombs Epps and Ralph J. Hils, Jr., review recent books by Alexander Astin and Michael A. Olivas on the problem of minority access to education. Reports are then presented on a course in literature and business developed at Monroe Community College (NY) and the Washington State Humanities Project. The volume concludes with the proceedings of the annual meetings of the Community College Humanities Association (CCHA); a list of CCHA members; the CCHA constitution; and a list of the association's standing committees and their duties.
