Fiscal year 1981 state and local tax performance data are presented, which indicate comparative utilization of taxable resources. Estimates are provided of tax ability for 15 major taxes and total taxes, and tax ability to tax collections for the 50 states and their subdivisions is compared. Tables include the following: population, personal income, and state and local general sales and gross receipts tax revenue for states, regions, and the nation (effort and ability amounts); state and local selective sales (e.g., alcoholic beverages, insurance taxes, public utilities) and gross receipts tax revenue; state death and gift tax revenue; state and local general property tax revenue; state and local individual and corporate income tax revenue; motor fuel consumption and tax revenue; severance taxes; state transfer taxes; state and local tax collections by source as percentage of total collections; total tax revenues as a percent of personal income and as a percent of general revenues; state and local tax ability and ability utilization, and extent of utilization (all taxes and major taxes); total tax revenue by level of government; and utilization of state and local tax ability for each of the 14 member states of the Southern Regional Education Board.
