An overview of Massachusetts public and private colleges, and institutional data from the 28 public colleges and universities supported by the state and the three public, nonstate supported two-year colleges are presented. Based on the Higher Education General Information Survey (HEGIS), data are presented on fall 1980 student enrollments, racial/ethnic characteristics of students, degrees granted (1979-1980), and full-time faculty. The enrollment and degree data are broken down by sex. The fall 1980 headcount enrollment statistics are presented in various formats, separating full- and part-time students, undergraduates, graduates and first professionals; and classified and unclassified students. The data are presented by institutional level (two-year, four-year, and university) and by sector (public/private). Degrees are listed according to the HEGIS classification system, which includes seven major fields of study for reporting associate degrees; 24 fields for bachelor, masters, and doctoral degrees; and 10 fields for first professional degrees. The faculty data are presented by type of employing institution and level and are differentiated by the number and tenure rate of men and women.
