The major factors affecting successful recruitment and utilization of school volunteers are reviewed in this booklet. The possibilities opened by such programs and the control that can be exercised over them are stressed in the opening pages of the document to encourage program implementation and assuage unnecessary fears. A 17-step process for setting up a districtwide program is outlined next; it includes such activities as assessing needs, establishing an advisory committee, developing program goals, selecting an organizational structure, reviewing relevant regulations, recruiting, planning, and evaluating the program. The booklet then discusses the recruitment, selection, orientation, and training of volunteers in more detail. Efforts schools can make to meet the needs and raise the morale of volunteers, take advantage of older volunteers, and fund the volunteer program complete the information provided in the document. References to successful programs illustrate the suggestions made in the text.
