Readability: Defining the Problems, Finding Solutions. A Connecticut ABE Staff Development Project Resource Unit.
Atwood, Beth S.
Designed to alert adult basic education teachers to the factors of readability and to suggest ways that some readability problems can be alleviated, this resource unit discusses the problems posed by readability formulas and suggests that teachers must both press for more readable adult texts and question intelligently the products of publishers and adult educators. It then examines (1) the mechanical, content, and language factors affecting readability; (2) visual tools used to enhance readability; (3) stylistic and formal clues used to enhance reading comprehension; (4) personal experience used for clues; (5) readability of teacher-made materials; (6) specialized jargon for every-day reading; (7) organizational clues that enhance readability; (8) a readability formula in use; and (9) the Fry formula for adult readability.
