Subject Area Reading in the Middle School: Learning through Text and Learning through Experience.
Bishop, David
Intended to help middle school teachers in all subject areas reeducate themselves to teach reading in the content areas, this booklet offers teacher made and tested techniques for reading, examples on vocabulary development, and discussion of different reading techniques, all designed to help students make a smooth transition from primary grade reading to more demanding reading. Following an introduction, the booklet is divided into four sections that discuss the following: (1) the middle school learner, (2) teacher guided reading of textbooks, (3) study guides for the reading of textbooks, and (4) organizing experience and language development. Appendixes contain sample worksheets for preparing study guides and related materials. The booklet concludes with a selected bibliography and references. (HTH)
