This curriculum guide is one in a series of three competency-based instructional materials dealing with marketing and distributive education (MADE). Covered in the individual sections of the guide are the following topics: job orientation (personal appearance, job opportunities, job interviews, basic skills, training plans, legal requirements, and safety); visual merchandising (displays, functions and elements of displays, principles of design, display construction, and evaluating displays); advertising (the function of advertising, advertising media, brand names and slogans, closing the gap between advertising and selling, advertising techniques and costs, and developments in advertising); store operations (types of store operations, retail store protection, store maintenance, stock control, inventory, stockkeeping, and caring for fixtures and displays); management (retail store patterns, store locations and arrangements, department layouts, financing, store policies, and personnel policies) product and service technology; and career areas (general merchandising, food service, food marketing, petroleum marketing, advertising, and finance). Each lesson includes an outline of material to cover, behavioral objectives, general competencies, a lesson plan, suggestions for applying specific competencies, an audiovisual list, a bibliography, a competency-based test, and directions for observing and evaluating competencies.
