Learning Centers: A Sensible Approach.
Dermer, Steve
An annotated bibliography approach was used in this report of a literature review/study designed to determine the effectiveness of learning centers in the classroom and to give classroom teachers a carefully planned system to ensure successful use of learning centers. The first section, which explains the rationale of using learning centers in the classroom, focuses on the need for individualization and activity-oriented materials. A definition of an effective and well-managed learning center is provided in the second section, which includes information on factors which detract from or interfere with learning center effectiveness, and suggests specific strategies needed to create successful learning centers. The third section explores the wide variety of learning centers possible, and discusses the use of learning centers in all curriculum areas and with all age groups. In addition to their annotations in the main sections of this paper, 34 books and journal articles are listed as references. A summary, conclusions, and recommendations conclude the report.
