This handbook for pupil personnel workers in Illinois opens with a discussion of the historical development of school guidance and counseling and its emergence in Illinois. The role and function of school guidance counselors is discussed, including group counseling and guidance, individual counseling, educational planning and placement, career guidance and counseling, appraisal, consultation, liaison and referral, evaluation, research, and public relations. The regulatory basis for guidance and counseling programs is outlined and the relationship of the State Board of Education to pupil personnel services is discussed. The materials also describe the standards for counselor certification.
