A Comparison of Selected Characteristics of Private and Public Schools. National Center for Education Statistics Bulletin.
Porter, Joanell T.
Private schools represented nearly 20 percent of all elementary and secondary schools in the United States during the 1980-81 school year. These 21,000 private schools enrolled more than 5 million students or nearly 11 percent of the total U.S. elementary and secondary enrollment. This bulletin indicates how these private schools and private school enrollments vary among the states and how the enrollment in sectarian and nonsectarian private schools is distributed among the various states.
