A survey of a sample of employers, high school vocational education completers, and postsecondary vocational education completers was taken to determine their perceptions of the current delivery system, student outcomes from vocational training, and the extent to which vocational education was meeting the labor market needs of the state of Montana. A mailed questionnaire was sent to a representative sample of 356 employers (28 percent return rate); telephone interviews were conducted with nine employers, surveys were mailed to 542 high school vocational education completers from the class of 1976, (31 percent returned); and to 587 completers of five postsecondary vocational technical education programs (28 percent returned). The employers were asked how they felt about the preparation of the vocational completers they had hired, and the completers were asked how their preparation had fitted them for their jobs, among other questions. Findings from the survey reflect a generally favorable picture of the status of vocational education in Montana. For example, 90 percent of the high school and 95 percent of the postsecondary vocational education completers expressed satisfaction with the vocational training they had received. Of those employers responding to the question, 74 percent indicated that they would prefer hiring a person from the high school vocational education program and 84 percent indicated the same for postsecondary vocational education completers. It was suggested that further study be given to areas of need found by the survey: additional training of workers, especially management and medically-related training. (KC)
