The papers in this publication discuss the land and how what happens to the land affects us. The publication is one in a series of monographs that examine the linkages between local and global concerns and explore alternative world futures. Examples of topics discussed in the papers follow. The paper "Land and World Order" examines implications of the population crisis on land, deforestation, and the need for unprecedented global cooperation. The paper "Land and the National Security Straitjacket" discusses how national security logic, undertaken originally in defense of the land, has now become so abstracted from its origins that it functions as an end in itself and often at the expense of the land. Another paper examines land ownership in various countries and shows how it affects the quality of life. Recommendations on organic farming are presented by one author. Other topics discussed include the need for planetary management, the vanishing heritage of agriculture, and the innovative concept called the Community Land Trust, which is a means for holding land by the community for the common good.
