An Annotated Bibliography of the Literature Dealing with Textbook and Curriculum Censorship in the Public Schools.

Undertaken to increase awareness among educators of the increasing problems of censorship in public schools and to inform them of some methods for avoiding controversies, this review of textbook and curriculum censorship uses annotations of more than 50 sources to present opposing sides of the question and present solutions. Divided into two parts, the first examines the censors, their reasons for attacking modern textbooks and curriculums, the views of those opposed to censorship, and the legal background for censorship. The second part presents strategies for educators to deal successfully with censorship in the future and is followed by a summary discussion, conclusions, and five practical recommendations for teachers.
