Desirable characteristics of beginning learning experiences and materials for migrant children in day care or early childhood programs are indicated, and a model for planning, constructing, and implementing helpful learning experiences is presented. Specific activities illustrating the application of the model are additionally described. Guidelines are provided for developing learning activities for 4-, 5-, and 6-year-old children in several curriculum areas: social and emotional development, reading and language arts, mathematics, science, art and creativity, and physical education. It is emphasized that every activity caregivers provide should give the child something to think about, something to do, something to talk about, and something to take away.
